MVRC provided the radio controlled aviation demonstration at the “See and Do Midway” for the 2011 Webelos Experience at Camp Stearns near Annandale, MN on October 1st. The weather was perfect for an early fall day and the several thousand young Webelo Scouts and their leaders were enjoying the whole experience. Many different events were provided for them to participate in, or to learn new things by demonstration and explanation. Our participation involved showing five airplanes and allowing the boys to work the transmitters on a mockup board of electronics, and on one or two actual models. Flying was somewhat restricted due to a very short and narrow runway but we did get off four more or less successful flights without a major incident. The crowd was especially enthusiastic and we got a lot of cheers and applause for the aerial demonstrations that we performed. Tom B. got a lot of attention when firing up his big gas engine on his beautiful triplane and the crowds migrated toward that sound every little while. Tom B. an Don R. were pretty busy answering questions, explaining what we could about model radio controlled airplanes, and doing some flying. This event is a premier exposure of model aviation to a very large number of people and a worthy event with which to be affiliated. These young Scouts are very eager to learn and very well coached by their adult leaders and their parents.
